What does falling in love entail? Is it to fulfil one’s heart’s desire and then allow the warmth and passion that person arouses in us to envelop us? Or is it merely a social requirement to achieve the ostensible objective of expanding the human population? If we concur with the former, we can also concur that throughout most of human history, the machinery known as religion and society has prosecuted, tortured, slaughtered, and oppressed non-heteronormative sexual minorities in various ways. Only in the 20th century did society start to gradually acknowledge that sexual inclinations that differ from the norm are not aberrant. Such ideals have long been expressed through art, and it is only logical that the concept would easily find a home in the art form that came to define the 20th century: film. Since the invention of the media, countless films have been produced that feature members of the LGBTQ communities. A bold stride in this direction was also taken by the New Queer Cinema movement.
Films of many genres now have a space to coexist and can be easily viewed by the general public thanks to the introduction of Netflix. We all know that Netflix is the king of the hill when it comes to streaming services, and this is just further evidence of the fact that they provide viewers the broadest selection of content. After all of that, here is a list of some of the best Netflix movies containing lesbian sex scenes that are now streaming:
Anne+: The Film (2021)
The Dutch film “Anne+: The Film” is a shortened version of the same-named Dutch television series. With this movie, showrunner Valerie Bisscheroux makes her directing debut. The central character, a 20-something writer, serves as the focus of the story. She plans to relocate to Montreal to be with her lover Sara. But, Anne encounters a crisis when her publisher informs her that the just submitted work is unclear. Anne learns that her partner might be interested in someone else in Montreal as she struggles with that and her natural aimlessness. At this point, she meets Lou, a non-binary person who assists her in resolving a number of problems in her life. Though the sex sequences in “Anne+: The Film” may not be as raucous and wild as those in some of the other films on this list, they do possess a certain poetic quality.
Duck Butter (2018)
The sex sequences in Miguel Arteta’s independent film “Duck Butter,” which he directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Alia Shawkat, have a lighthearted feel to them. The latter also performs the role of Naima or Nima, the film’s protagonist. Nima, an actor, finds it difficult to connect with the role she was just given. Even talking to the movie’s directors is ineffective. At a homosexual pub, she encounters a lady named Sergio. Sergio describes a relationship where a pair spends 24 hours together while having sex once every hour after they have intercourse. After Nima is let go from the movie, she persuades Sergio to try out her idea on the two of them.
Elisa & Marcela (2019)
“Elisa & Marcela” or “Elisa y Marcela,” a film written and directed by Isabel Coixet, is said to be based on the true story of two ladies who were married in Spain in 1901. Elisa and Mercela’s acts were courageous and daring considering that same-sex marriages weren’t permitted in Spain until 2005. In Argentina’s Chubut Region, their narrative opens. The two of them finally get back together despite being forced apart by Marcela’s conventional father, who enrols her in boarding school. Elisa and Marcela move in together, with the former posing as Mario, Elisa’s deceased cousin. The sex sequences in “Elisa & Mercela” feel more personal than any other movie on this list since it is such a deep meditation of love, life, and sexuality.
More the Merrier (2021)
More the Merrier, also known as “Donde caben dos,” is a spicy romantic comedy directed by Pablo Caballero that is overflowing with all kinds of sensual situations. The common thread uniting the five parallel stories in the movie is polyamory. Two couples are the focus of one tale. The husbands get along like brothers. Their other halves fall in love with each other as they plot a wife exchange. Another narrative centres on a woman who dropped her engagement ring the previous evening and is now trying to recall where she put it. One of these tales concerns a couple attempting to rekindle the romance in their union. In doing so, they go to a swinger’s club, where they learn that the man they ultimately choose once dated the woman.
Ride or Die (2021)
The film “Ride or Die,” directed by Ryuichi Hiroki (of “Kabukicho Love Hotel” fame), is based on a screenplay written by Nami Sakkawa and adapted from the manga series “Gunj” by Ching Nakamura. The story revolves around Rei Nagasawa (Kiko Mizuhara) and Nanae Shinoda (Honami Satô), two friends from their youth. When they were younger, the former had a crush on Nanae, but she didn’t return the favour. Years later, she contacts Rei to find out if she still loves her and, if so, whether she has the power to murder her abusive husband. Rei kills Nanae’s husband despite having a girlfriend, forcing her to flee with the other woman. In “Ride or Die,” there aren’t many sexual scenes, but those that are present are integral to the story, including one between the two lead characters near the end of the movie.
