The 1999 American comedy film Big Daddy was based on a story by Steve Franks and written by Tim Herlihy, Adam Sandler, and Dennis Dugan. The story revolves around 32-year-old Sonny Koufax, who is dumped by his lover for refusing to take responsibility. Then, Sonny makes an effort to behave responsibly by adopting Julian, a five-year-old boy who shows up on his doorstep. On a $34.2 million budget, Big Daddy brought in $234.8 million at the global box office.

In the movie, Sandler played Sonny Koufax, a 32-year-old law school alumnus who declines to take the bar exam and practise law. Sonny takes in a little child who is abandoned at his apartment’s doorstep after his fiancée dumps him because he won’t grow up. In addition to Mr. Deeds, Punch-Drunk Love, Anger Management, 50 First Dates, The Longest Yard, Click, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Grown Ups, Grown Ups 2, Blended, the Hotel Transylvania series, and Murder Mystery, Sandler has been busy since his role in Big Daddy. Before founding Happy Madison Productions, Adam Sandler’s production firm, Big Daddy was his previous movie. Along with his career in the entertainment industry, Sandler has also produced and released a number of comedy albums, including Stan and Judy’s Kid in 1999, Shhh… Don’t Tell in 2004, and 100 percent Fresh in 2019, which served as the audio for his 2018 Netflix stand-up special of the same name. The actor’s upcoming film role is in the drama-comedy Uncut Gems.
Allen Covert (Phil D’Amato)
Sonny’s pal Phil D’Amato was portrayed by Covert. In numerous movies, including Little Nicky, Mr. Deeds, Eight Crazy Nights, Anger Management, 50 First Dates, The Longest Yard, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Bedtime Stories, Just Go With It, Sandy Wexler, and Murder Mystery, the actor has starred alongside Sandler. In addition to acting, Covert co-wrote the screenplays for The Benchwarmers and Grandma’s Boy. Along with executive producing I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, The House Bunny, Grown Ups 2, Blended, Hotel Transylvania 2, The Do-Over, and Father of the Year, he also contributed as an associate producer to Big Daddy, Little Nicky, and Mr. Deeds.
Dylan and Cole Sprouse (Julian McGrath)
Julian McGrath, the young child who shows up on Sonny’s doorstep and ultimately aids in his maturation, was a character shared by the Sprouse brothers. Dylan and Cole Sprouse have collaborated on projects since playing Julian, including I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, The Master of Disguise, and The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things. Following their performances as the eponymous characters on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody on the Disney Channel, the two first appeared as themselves in the 2003 movie Just 4 Kicks! The twins returned to their roles in The Suite Life on Deck from 2008 until 2011 after the third and final season of the series aired in 2008. The Suite Life Movie, a spinoff of the series, was released in 2011. Cole previously appeared on Friends from 2000 to 2002 in a guest role as Ross Geller’s (David Schwimmer) son Ben. The brothers took a sabbatical from acting after leaving the Disney Channel to study at New York University, where they received their degrees in 2015. Cole is a talented photographer and presently plays Jughead Jones on Riverdale on The CW. He also played a cystic fibrosis patient in the 2019 movie Five Feet Apart. The thriller Silk Road will feature him next. Following his college graduation, Dylan appeared in the movies Dismissed and Banana Split. His next movies include Tyger Tyger and Turnadot. In addition to his acting career, Dylan is the proprietor of All-Wise Meadery in Brooklyn, New York.
Joey Lauren Adams (Layla Maloney)
In the movie, Adams played Layla Maloney, Sonny’s love interest. The actress followed up her Big Daddy role with roles in Harvard Man, The Big Empty, The Break-Up, Blue Caprice, Sequoia, and Animal. Adams’ most well-known performance, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe, was as Alyssa Jones in the 1997 movie Chasing Amy. She has made cameos on Party Down, United States of Tara, Switched at Birth, and Grey’s Anatomy, among other TV shows. From 2016 to 2017, Adams played Debbie Lynn Cooke in the CMT television programme Still the King. The actress will next play the same character from Kevin Smith’s upcoming Jay and Silent Bob revival as she did in Chasing Amy.
Jon Stewart (Kevin Gerrity)
Stewart played Kevin Gerrity, Julian’s biological father and Sonny’s roommate. In the hopes that Kevin will raise the child, Julian’s mother leaves her son at Kevin and Sonny’s apartment while Kevin is away on business. Stewart went on to headline The Daily Show from 1999 to 2015 after his time as Kevin. A current executive producer for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he also co-created The Colbert Report. Stewart has collected 22 Emmy Awards during the course of his career. His acting resume includes parts in the movies Death to Smoochy and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Stewart also presided over the 80th Academy Awards, the 44th Grammy Awards, and the 43rd and 43rd Grammy Awards, respectively. In addition to directing, writing, and producing the 2020 picture Irresistible, Stewart also produced the 2014 film Rosewater. Stewart has also received two Grammy awards, first for Earth (The Book): A Visitor’s Guide to Human Race in 2011 and then for America (The Book): A Citizen’s Guide to Democracy Inaction in the best comedy album category in 2005.
Kristy Swanson (Vanessa)
Swanson portrayed Vanessa, Sonny’s girlfriend who eventually dumped him because of his immaturity. Swanson has appeared in Beethoven’s Treasure Tail, Dude, Where’s My Car?, Soul Assassin, What If…, and Big Daddy since her performance in the latter movie. Swanson has additionally appeared in a number of television programmes as a guest star, including Just Shoot Me!, CSI: Miami, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, One Tree Hill, and SEAL Team. She also appeared on Psych from 2011 to 2014 in the recurring role of Marlowe Viccellio. Swanson has also made numerous appearances in movies made specifically for television, such as A Christmas Wish, Merry Ex-Mas, Driven Underground, Bad Stepmother, and Winter’s Dream.
Leslie Mann (Corinne Maloney)
Mann played Corinne, Layla’s sister and Kevin’s fiancée. Sonny and Corinne don’t get along; he frequently makes fun of her for working as a waitress at Hooters. Peter Dante (Tommy Grayton)
In the movie, Dante played Tommy Grayton, a friend of Sonny. Dante is a regular collaborator of Sandler’s, just like the majority of the Big Daddy group. The movies Little Nicky, Mr. Deeds, Eight Crazy Nights, Stuck On You, 50 First Dates, Grandma’s Boy, Just Go With It, Jack and Jill, and Grown Ups 2 have all featured Dante since his appearance in Big Daddy. In 2007, the actor also made a cameo on The King of Queens. Dante is a musician and a member of the band Rad Omen in addition to being an actor. 2011 saw the launch of Dante’s solo album Peace, Love, and Freedom.
Rob Schneider (Nazo)
Nazo, a delivery man who is Sonny’s pal, was portrayed by Schneider. A fellow SNL veteran of Sandler’s has worked with him on numerous movies. The movies Mr. Deeds, The Hot Chick, 50 First Dates, The Benchwarmers, You Don’t Mess With the Zohan, American Virgin, Grown Ups, The Ridiculous 6 and Sandy Wexler feature Schneider as an actor. In addition to acting in it, Schneider also directed the 2010 movie The Chosen One. He had a one-season starring role in the CBS sitcom Rob in 2012, and he’s been as a guest on Inside Amy Schumer and Hot in Cleveland. Schneider and his family played themselves on the Netflix series Real Rob from 2015 to 2017.
Steve Buscemi (Homeless Guy)
In Big Daddy, Buscemi has a brief part as a homeless man. The actor has since gone on to star in the movies The Grey Zone, Monsters, Inc., Ghost World, Big Fish, The Death of Stalin, and The Dead Don’t Die in addition to the 1999 picture. Additionally, Buscemi has acted alongside Sandler in movies including Mr. Deeds, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Grown Ups, and the Hotel Transylvania series.
