In the epilogue of Eternals, Lia McHugh’s Sprite receives her desires and, like Pinocchio, transforms into a real girl. Although Sprite gave up her immortality to live a human life, it is never made clear in Chloé Zhao’s superhero epic if she retained her illusionary abilities. The riddle has now been resolved thanks to a final response from co-author Kaz Firpo, who spoke with The Direct.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Eternals are artificial beings that the Celestials, beings that resemble gods and construct galaxies, have made. Every Eternal carries a spark of creation’s light within them, enabling them to display extraordinary powers. In the case of Sprite, she has the ability to alter the visual environment, producing mirages or concealing items from view.
Although Sprite has the appearance of a little child, she is actually 7,000 years old, which prevents her from blending in with the other Eternals. Because of this, towards the conclusion of Eternals, Sersi (Gemma Chan) transforms Sprite into a human who would eventually get old and pass away. Unfortunately, Sprite’s connection to the Celestials’ light was destroyed during this metamorphosis, therefore she will no longer possess superhuman abilities, according to Firpo.
In the words of Firpo:
“Insofar as we’ve always understood it, the ability to draw on Celestial energy is what makes an Eternal an Eternal, and essentially what Sersi has done is eliminate that power. She has removed the generator from her body. She is now, as far as we know, just a mortal who will develop as she ages and lives among us in real life without possessing that magical talent. lacks the delusions that would enable her to lead a different life. In our eyes, she is therefore physical flesh and blood.
And so it is. Sprite can no longer make illusions because she is a whole human. However, perhaps Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) could teach her a thing or two in upcoming movies?
Stars in Eternals include Barry Keoghan as Druig, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Kit Harington as Dane Whitman. In addition to introducing a new group of formidable superheroes, Eternals explains why the Eternals withdrew when Thanos destroyed half of the cosmos and divulges the background of the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Early Eternals reviews have been mixed, pointing out how the epic scope of the film occasionally interferes with a story that is primarily concerned with interpersonal relationships. Eternals opened at a $71 million domestic box office, with an additional $90 million coming from foreign markets, despite this. It’s still too early to predict if Eternals will lose steam in its second weekend, but if the film manages to keep drawing audiences to the theatres, it may still end up being a success—even by Marvel’s lofty standards.
