Eye of the Storm: Real Inspiration Behind Zheng Xia and Tai He Ang?

The events of “Eye of the Storm” on Netflix take place in a Taiwanese hospital in 2003 after the SARS virus pandemic. More than a thousand people, including staff, patients, and visitors, are stuck inside the hospital as they struggle against terror and panic. The sufferers initially become irritable and anxious about sharing space with the unidentified afflicted people. The physicians and nurses soon catch on to this anxiety, though, as they are concerned about contracting the infection themselves.

Even though the story is told from the perspectives of many other patients inside the hospital, two characters stand out as the story’s central figures. Dr. Zheng Xia is a surgeon who will do anything to leave the hospital, and Tai-He Ang is a young nurse who will do whatever it takes to care for as many patients as she can. The events of the movie lead them both down a treacherous path. You might be curious as to whether Zheng Xia and Tai-He Ang are based on real persons given that the movie is based on true facts. Let’s investigate.

Are Zheng Xia and Tai-He Ang Based on Real Doctors?

“Eye of the Storm” is based on the real lives of the patients at Taiwan’s Heping Hospital. The events are seen via a fictitious perspective, though. Liu Tsun-han, the film’s writer, developed the characters in order to advance the narrative. However, they were motivated by actual medical professionals who sacrificed a lot to save lives.

Yang Chi-Hsien was one of the doctors who was put in an unfavourable situation yet nevertheless managed to perform admirably. Several hospital staff members resisted leaving their rooms during the quarantine, leaving the patients to fend for themselves. Because there were so few medical professionals available, Yang, a psychiatry specialist with little experience treating infectious infections and other conditions, was sent to the front lines. His employers informed him that nobody else sought the position when he questioned why he was being called.

Yang was assigned to the hospital’s B-wing, where the majority of the infected patients were being cared for by a small, overburdened, and worn-out staff. For fear of contracting the illness, some employees skipped their shifts, leaving their teammates tired to the point of collapse. They were unable to adequately eat because they were too busy seeing to the patients, whose numbers were rising. Yang found that despite their seeming anger, they were actually grateful for his presence because “no one else was willing to come.”

“I experienced a sudden surge of energy, and the terror in my chest appeared to go. These nurses kept things under control in block B by containing SARS and caring for the patients without thinking about their own safety. It was as if their confidence had rubbed off on me when I realised that there were people who would go to such extent for others,” Yang added.

‘Eye of the Storm’ presents several perspectives on the story through individuals like Zheng Xia and Tai-He Ang. Dr. Xia initially desires to quit the hospital. He fears contracting an infection and being separated from his loved ones. In order to avoid any circumstance that would put him in the same room as an infected individual, he too hides in a room. By the end, though, he changes his mind, especially after witnessing other patients endure misery and be left to fend for themselves because physicians and nurses have gone on strike.

In a similar spirit, there is Tai-He Ang who is so committed to his work that he assists people both when he is well and when he is ill. The Netflix film highlights the bravery, commitment, and toil of individuals like Xia and Tai-He. Despite being fictional, they stand in for the actual frontline workers who risk their lives to assist others.
