The third season of HBO’s “His Dark Materials” concludes the series’ plot and brings the fanciful events in Lyra and Will’s journey to a suitable conclusion. All of the characters’ travels had been building up to this moment, when everything comes together and ties up the loose threads one by one. The show’s ending moves viewers with its combination of intense battle sequences and poignant passages. For its characters, particularly for Will and Lyra, it represents the start of a new adventure rather than its conclusion in certain ways. Here is a summary of what transpired in Season 3’s final two episodes and what it meant for the characters. Spoilers follow.
His Dark Materials Episode 7 and 8 Recap
In the final two episodes of the season, Lord Asriel confronts Metatron while his daughter carries out the prophecy that has been the focus of everyone’s attention for the entire time. If necessary, The Clouded Mountain will use brute force to subdue Metatron and throw him into the abyss as it advances on Asriel’s Republic. In order to slay Metatron and save Lyra, both of Lyra’s parents ultimately make the ultimate sacrifice. Mrs. Coulter accompanies him on this journey.
After the conflict is done, Will and Lyra travel to the land of the Mulefa, where they meet up with their daemons once more. They first encounter Mary Malone, who eventually decides to play the Serpent, before that. She explains to Lyra and Will that curiosity and a desire for knowledge are not bad things, and that Dust is actually pure consciousness rather than sin. Father Lopez also enters this world with the intention of capturing the Serpent, but instead meets Balthamos. Will and Lyra eventually reach the part of the prophecy where Lyra turns into the second Eve and dies.
His Dark Materials Finale Ending: How Did Will and Lyra Fulfil the Prophecy?
The witches spoke about a child who would put an end to destiny in the first season, which is when Lyra’s prophesy was stated. According to the Church’s view, Lyra is the next Eve who would sinned and cause the world to become sinful. In both of these situations, interpretation becomes essential to comprehending Lyra’s specific role. By breaking the hold of Authority over the planet, Lyra is intended to save the world for the witches. She will, however, bring about the end of the world as they know it for the Magisterium. But when you get right down to it, things are considerably easier.
Mary Malone finds herself in a planet that is dying because Dust is leaving it at the start of the third season. In each of the other worlds, the same thing has been taking place. Mary is informed by the Mulefa that this process can only be stopped by doing something that draws Dust back into the world. Mary sees Dust as the yearning for a significant discovery by connecting it to thoughts, feelings, and creativity. However, it finally turns out that what draws Dust back is just the straightforward act of two innocent children becoming adults.
It was obvious from the outset that when children turned into adults, Dust began to gather about them. Their daemons also took on a single form at this time. The fact that Dust avoided kids explains why Spectres in the Cittagazze reality did not harm kids. Lyra and Will were still young when they set out on their voyage and when they finally arrived in the world of the Mulefa. Although they were gradually transitioning, the process wasn’t yet finished.
They become aware of their love for one another as they enter the Mulefa world. Teenagers are inspired to communicate their sentiments to one another by Mary’s account of how she fell in love and how it inspired her to abandon her life as a nun and venture out into the world to experience everything it has to offer. It is a transforming act for them because this is the first time they have ever felt love. When they kiss, they pass from youth to adulthood, from innocence to experience. They do this by drawing Dust toward themselves, which the universe required.
Given the significant attention paid to the prophecy involving Lyra, it may seem like a pretty ordinary thing to have happened, but context is crucial in such circumstances. The youngster was said to realize her destiny in an other universe. The point of being at the right place at the right time was that this youngster could have been anyone. After Metatron’s collapse, only a voyage like Lyra’s could have brought a kid to the land of the Mulefa. It makes natural that Lyra was picked for this, even if her act was simply falling in love, since only she and Will went on that voyage.
Despite everything they have gone through, Lyra and Will do not end up together, which is one of the factors that makes the ending of “His Dark Materials” so sad. especially once they realize they have feelings for one another. When Dust begins to return to the realm of the Mulefa, Xaphania informs Lyra and Will that this process is temporary. The numerous windows that previous knife-bearers left open between the realms are still letting dust seep out of the worlds and fall into the abyss. When the knife is used, it not only causes Dust to flow out of its world but also opens them up to other things like Spectres. Closing all the windows is the only way to stop things from getting so bad again and save the multiverse.
Previously, Lyra and Will had intended to temporarily return to their respective worlds, but they were confident that they would stay in touch because Will could easily enter and exit Lyra’s reality. However, to permanently close the window would require one of them to abandon their current reality. However, Will goes on to say that even that is not likely. His father advised him in the last episode that he would have to decide whether to return to his own planet when the time came. He won’t live if he exists in a different universe. This means that if they wish to survive, Will and Lyra will both need to go back to their own worlds.
They are now in a hopeless predicament as a result. Should they decide to forgo prudence and act however they wish in favor of saving the planet and remaining apart from one another forever? They ultimately decide to act morally. Will returns to his reality, while Lyra returns to hers. They make a pact to return to the bench at the Botanical Garden on the same day and at the same hour every year in memory of one another. They may still be connected in some sense even though they were on opposite sides of the world.
Why Does Will Break the Knife?
Will permanently destroys the Subtle Knife after he returns to his realm. They will never again see each other as a result of this, making their separation permanent. But why was it so crucial to carry out such a terrible deed? Lyra and Will are informed by Xaphania that the knife is what has been causing all of the Dust to leak out. It is a special knife with special qualities that are so potent that some people think it might even be able to kill the Authority.
Due to the knife’s special properties, only the bearer has the ability to close any windows it has opened for as long as it is in existence. The angels will once again be able to close the windows on their own after the knife is destroyed, according to Xaphania. However, as long as there is a knife, someone will be carrying it, and that person will be the only one with power. There is no way that Will can spend his entire life walking around closing all the windows by himself because there are endless universes with countless windows. The windows can all be instantly closed by the angels, on the other hand.
Will sacrifices himself and destroys the knife as soon as he shuts the window between his world and Lyra’s in order to prevent all of the worlds from perish. He had previously dropped his focus when thinking about his mother, breaking the knife. This time, he has Lyra on his mind, and as a result, the knife fully breaks. Iorek Byrnison, who lives in Lyra’s universe, is the only one who could have made it work again. This implies that the knife is permanently lost. The universe is put back in order, all the windows are shut at once, and the healing process for all the planets begins.
