The highly regarded fantasy show His Dark Materials’ third season finally debuted on HBO in December 2022 after great anticipation. The programme, which is based on Philip Pullman’s book series of the same name, centres on an orphan named Lyra who lives in a fantastical setting.
With the aid of her friend Will Parry, Lyra hopes to rid the realm of the tyrannical Magisterium. The program’s three seasons all connected with viewers and became wildly popular. Fans are currently speculating about whether a fourth season of the show will air. Here is what we currently know.
Is His Dark Materials Season 4 Happening?
The fourth season of His Dark Materials will not air because the plot has been wrapped up. Based on the Pullman trilogy of novels, the series was originally intended to be a three-season production.
With the season 3 finale, the whole source material from the original novels has finally been adapted for the screen, bringing the show to an end. The plot was brought to a close in the final season by bringing characters together and introducing some important twists.
Now that their voyage together is over, Lyra and Will have returned to their respective worlds. Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter both perished in the fight against the Authority, which has likewise come to an end. There is not much room for another season given the current events.
Show’s Star Amir Wilson Talks About the Plans for Season 4
Amir Wilson, who played Will Parry in His Dark Materials, recently spoke out regarding the show’s creators’ intention to stop it after season 3, further reiterating that there would be no season 4.
“I believe that was their strategy. I agreed to join with the potential of doing future seasons when I signed up. But it was clear that they were planning to film a second season when I arrived. They most likely knew they would produce three seasons and leave it at that. It sort of made sense that there were three novels and three seasons, the actor said.
“It’s a bittersweet time,” Wilson continued. I’m overjoyed that we can now publicly display the product of our seven-month effort. But it’s starting to sink in that this is kind of over now. I’m glad I can share it with you. Now that it’s finished and I won’t be playing Will any longer, it’s truly sinking in.
His Dark Materials Universe Can Continue with Spin-Offs
Even though His Dark Materials won’t be returning for a fourth season, numerous spin-offs and sequels/prequels to the series are still conceivable. Lyra and Pan are the subjects of two books by Pullman that could serve as the basis for a follow-up series.
The Book of Dust trilogy, a second book-length work, further develops the His Dark Materials universe. Ten years after the events of the HDM finale, Lyra’s life is followed in the second novel in the series. The prospect of a spin-off was also raised by producer Jane Tranter, who also expressed her desire to work on The Book of Dust.
If a spin-off is created, Dafne Keen, who portrayed Lyra on the show, has also indicated interest in playing the part again. In a recent interview, Keen said, “I wish I could [play Lyra] for the rest of my life.”
