Joker 2, also known as Joker: Folie à Deux, is about to begin filming, however the sequel won’t be released for a very long time.
The sequel was formally announced in June 2022 when returning writer-director Todd Phillips revealed that the script, co-written with Scott Silver, had been finished. This followed a lot of back-and-forth and refuted rumours.
Additionally, the screenplay page he released revealed the interesting official title of Joker: Folie à Deux, and ever since, fans have been spoiled with a variety of thrilling character additions, including Lady Gaga herself.
Here is all the information you need to know about Joker: Folie à Deux while we wait for the sequel to be released in theatres.
Joker 2 release date: When is Joker Folie A Deux out in cinemas?
Joker: Folie à Deux will open in theatres on October 4, 2024, according to Warner Bros, presuming there are no unforeseen delays.
The sequel was slated to begin filming in “five or six weeks,” or late November or early December, according to cinematographer Lawrence Sher, who made the announcement in late October 2022. Even as you read this, it might have already begun filming.
Joker 2 title: What does Joker Folie A Deux mean?
The French expression “madness of two” or “shared psychosis” is “folie à deux,” which is also frequently used in English to refer to this specific type of mental disease. It refers to a “delusion or mental illness shared by two people in close association.”
The title indicates that Arthur Fleck’s shattered psyche will once more be examined on screen, but it could also indicate the appearance of a second protagonist as a real second person with whom Joker reveals his intentions.
If we’re correct, Harley Quinn will probably share Arthur’s illusion or mental condition in the follow-up.
We feel strongly about how inadequately Joker explored preconceptions of mental illness, and we can only hope that the sequel does better.
Joker 2 cast: Who’s joining Joaquin Phoenix in Joker Folie A Deux?
It goes without saying that Joaquin Phoenix will return as Arthur Fleck, a.k.a. the Joker, but let’s wait and see if the sequel will bring him another Oscar.
As previously announced, Lady Gaga will play Harley Quinn in the movie. She would be the second Harley Quinn in the Worlds of DC after Margot Robbie
, but keep in mind that Joker takes place in a different chronology from movies like Suicide Squad.
Robbie expressed his delight at the choice, saying, “It’s such an honour to have developed a foundation solid enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to try out playing, and I think she’ll do something fantastic with it.”
Harry Lawtey from Industry, Catherine Keener from Get Out, Jacob Lofland from Maze Runner, and Brendan Gleeson from Banshees of Inisherin will all be joining the cast in unspecified roles.
Zazie Beetz is expected to return as Sophie, although it’s unclear at this time whether Douglas Hodge and Dante Pereira-Olson will continue to play Bruce Wayne and Alfred Pennyworth, respectively.
Joker 2 plot: What will Joker Folie A Deux be about?
Other than what we may infer from the title, no specific narrative details have been revealed as of yet (which we mentioned above). We do, however, know that the film will at least partially be a musical.
After the riots that tore through Gotham City were put down by the police, Arthur was reportedly arrested and taken to Arkham State Hospital in the film Joker’s closing scene. He dances along the hospital hallway in the film’s concluding image, leaving scarlet tracks in his wake (presumably having killed the doctor examining him).
Who will be Arthur’s adversary is the other crucial question for the Joker sequel. In the first movie, the Joker’s biggest obstacle was actually him. The film’s main plot revolved around his transformation from a hazily normal member of civil society into a ruthless killer.
Where do we proceed from here, though? What new information about the Joker is there? To find out, we’ll have to wait a bit.
Joker 2 trailer: Any footage of Joker Folie A Deux yet?
The only thing we have so far is a very brief teaser that Lady Gaga uploaded on her Twitter account. It merely consists of dark silhouette pictures of Gaga and Phoenix set to music.
