On March 8, a 32-year-old man opened fire on three police officers while they were investigating.
Jonathan Magana, who lived in Los Angeles and was on parole, was found dead after a standoff with police that lasted several hours.
After 6 p.m., the shooting happened near the corner of Mission Road and North Broadway. When police were looking for the 32-year-old, he ran into a house and locked himself in a shed nearby.
The police K-9 unit was called in and a perimeter was set up. Officers tried to get Magana to come out, but he wouldn’t. So, they put a chemical agent where he was hiding.
At a news conference, LAPD Commander Stacy Spell said, “Unfortunately, that suspect responded to the chemical agent by opening the shed and shooting at the officers.” “The officers then shot back, and three members of the Metropolitan K-9 unit were hurt.”
A nearby neighbour said that between eight and ten gunshots were heard in total.
The police sent out a tactical alert for the whole city, and a SWAT team was called in after an LAPD robot went into the house and more tear gas was used.
The suspect was found by officers who were searching the area. He was asleep when they found him.
The 32-year-old parolee was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The parolee shot three police officers, and they were all taken to the hospital in stable condition. They all had different gunshot wounds. According to the doctors, the police officers should get better in the next few days.
Magana, the dead suspect, had a long list of crimes on his record, including hitting a police officer and having a gun without a permit.
His last arrest was in October, and he was freed the next day. The 32-year-old man had already been found guilty of felony robbery and selling methamphetamines.
Magana’s cause of death has not been said by the coroner yet. It’s not clear if the police shot him, if he killed himself, or if he died of something else.
Alfred Labrada, the assistant chief of the LAPD, said this about the hostile situation: “A very deadly situation. We’re glad no one was hurt and that the officers will be fine.”
