‘You’ is the kind of show that may easily make you fear your safety in the transparent world we live in, from your social media security to pretty much everything else in your personal life. But it’s the show’s portrayal of its main character, Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), that gets under your skin the most. Joe will go to any length to have the girl of his dreams, despite his phony charm, “good guy” demeanor, and unforgivable behavior.
To keep you captivated as a viewer, the show employs a variety of plot techniques, character traits, and, of course, lovemaking sequences. If you were even remotely interested in the Netflix series ‘You,’ here is a list of the best sex scenes from it. WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!
A Consequence (Season 2 Episode 4)
Another scene in Episode 4 involves Delilah, Joe’s landlady, having sex with a cop. As inconsequential as this scenario may appear at the time, it becomes a vital storyline aspect later on. Following Joe’s separation with Love, Delilah and Joe become closer in the following episodes.
They have intercourse on the corner of a street in the seventh episode, and a cop is there to catch them. Delilah’s officer “buddy” turns up soon after and refuses to aid them. However, soon after, he conducts a background check on Joe and discovers that something about him is actually suspicious. Delilah is finally arrested for having some sort of contact with the two men. In the episodes that follow, a tiny blunder has tremendous ramifications.
A New Beginning (Season 1 Episode 7)
Joe’s relationship with Beck deteriorates dramatically as a result of the events that follow, and she becomes increasingly distant over time. Surprisingly, he understands he needs to let her go and ends their connection. This is when, near the end of the episode, he runs into Karen and sleeps with her to take his mind off Beck. However, this quickly develops into a relationship, and Karen soon realizes that she is nothing more than Joe’s rebound.
A New Obsession (Season 2 Episode 3)
Joe changes his name and relocates to Los Angeles to start over. He compels himself to abandon his previous ways in order to be a “decent man” now. But, in the end, he is who he is, and the ghosts of his past will never leave him. He meets yet another woman and begins to obsess over her once more. This time, though, he refrains from getting too close to her and instead keeps things platonic. He tells himself over and over that Love (his current “victim”) is “not like any other woman he’s ever met.”
With this, he eventually gives in to his cravings, and after brewing things up for a long time, the two of them finally have sex for the first time, but little does he know that what began as an infatuation will eventually turn into something far more terrible. Season 3 takes a step back when it comes to needless nudity and sex, and it makes practically every sex scene relevant in the context of the overall plot in more than one manner.
A Night to Remember (Season 3 Episode 8)
Few sex scenes are as tense as Joe and Love’s evening of group lovemaking with their power couple neighbors Sherry and Cary. Cary introduces them to his collection of sexual stimulants after some lighthearted flirting. Love, on the other hand, becomes increasingly upset as she watches Sherry climb atop Joe, and even watches them commit the crime! An emotional outburst interrupts the lovemaking, which is understandable.
Even as Love watches, Joe visualizes Marienne (rather than Sherry) atop himself, adding another twisted aspect to the scenario. Joe has had fantasies about Marienne before, but this is the most vivid one yet.
Aside having being a suspenseful and steamy moment, this sequence also marks the start of things getting truly bad, especially for Sherry and Cary. It also serves as a reminder of how much closer Love is to Joe than vice versa. Love’s subsequent angry acts are set in motion by her attempting to control her violent tendencies while watching her spouse with another woman.
Joe starts comparing Karen to Beck unconsciously, but he still enjoys being with her. Meanwhile, Beck moves on with her life, even though she still misses Joe, and even publishes a book about Karen that becomes a great bestseller. But, much to her dismay, she soon bumps across Joe again, and the two of them have sex multiple times. They might feel the thrill of being caught everywhere, from their bedrooms to changing rooms and many other places. And with that, all of the sex scenes from season one come to an end. The episodes that follow take on a darker tone, and let’s just say things don’t end well for Beck. She should have written about her deceased best friend instead.
A Second Chance (Season 1 Episode 4)
He discovers Beck has been talking to another man during one of his stalking missions, and he even invites her to a Charles Dickens event in Nyack. Joe follows her there, as planned, out of envy, making sure she is completely unaware of his presence. He eventually learns that the man she had been texting was none other than her father, and he is obliged to tell her that he, too, is attending the festival.
Joe finds himself having dinner with Beck’s father and her family as a result of a chain of events. Joe reaches out to Beck after an argument between her and her father and, once again, makes her fall for him. This is when they have sex all over again, and Joe not only manages to last longer this time, but he also manages to amaze Beck. In comparison to other sex scenes in the series, this one has a more comedic appeal while also catching you off surprise.
When it comes to depicting sex on TV, realism is sometimes tossed out the window. There is no flawless foreplay building up to the act of sex, and the characters just go right into it. However, there is a surprising amount of realism in this scene. There’s also a smidgeon of humour thrown in for good measure. This time they find up at Joe’s, and Joe, who has been taking and hoarding Beck’s belongings all along, has everything strewn around his flat. So, while the two of them make out, he distracts her and tries to hide all of her possessions at the same time. This takes away some of the reality that the film had, but it is still fairly entertaining.
Eight-second Joe (Season 1 Episode 3)
While Joe continues to try to persuade Beck that he is “the one,” Beck appears to have reservations about him. Beck meets up with other men who, according to Joe, are “millennial man-boys” in order to forget about Benji (who is “out of the way”). However, Joe is able to become closer to her soon after, and she even tells him about her father. Beck brings him home near the end of the third episode, and the two of them eventually make love. Unfortunately for him, he does not stay long, and Beck and her buddy Peach refer to him as “eight-second Joe.” Joe finally backs off as a result of this, out of sheer disappointment, but the stalking continues.
I Would Kill For You (Season 3 Episode 2)
Joe and Love ultimately reconcile in this scene after being at odds since they moved into their new suburban existence. The primary couple begins Season 3 on a markedly disconnected note, with the baby keeping them occupied, to say nothing of Joe’s love with the neighbor. Of course, the fact that they are both suspected killers adds to the suspense.
We see some of the old animalistic sparks that Joe and Love had for one other when they finally come together after such a long time. It’s a long, sweet sequence that serves as a decent counterpoint to the turmoil that follows. The sequence is also punctuated by reminders of the couple’s new circumstances, as we show them putting their newborn to sleep before getting a little rowdy. More in keeping with the ‘You’ motif, shortly after they finish making love, Joe and Love both declare that they would death for the other (which they’ve both previously shown sarcastically).
Joe Does It Again! (Season 3 Episode 9)
After having deadly dreams about Marienne, a single mother Joe encounters at the library, he determines that having an affair with her would put her life in jeopardy. However, after consoling her one afternoon, the inevitable occurs, and Joe and Marienne meet. Shots of the two prisoners Joe has trapped in his cellar are ominously interwoven with scenes of their lovemaking.
Joe slides down the slippery slope he’d hoped to avoid by sleeping with Marienne. He involves Marianne, a young mother, in his perilous escapades, and when Love finds out, he attacks Marianne with a knife. The lovemaking sequences are tender, highlighting the cruel reality of who our hero is and what he is capable of. Marienne is an innocent participant in Joe’s machinations, and the lovemaking scenes are tender, emphasizing the brutal reality of who our hero is and what he is capable of.
Stalker Alert! (Season 1 Episode 1)
When you first see Joe Goldberg, the bookshop manager, you perceive a sweet young man who wouldn’t hurt a fly. But then the real fun begins. When he first meets writer Guinevere Beck, he is immediately taken to her. He soon becomes obsessed with her, and Beck, who appears to have no curtains, becomes a victim of his bizarre stalker. Joe monitors all of her social activities and has even broken into her apartment and stolen some of her belongings. This reflects the type of world we live in as well. With the ease with which information can be obtained, almost anyone can gain access to our personal information.
Joe goes up to Beck’s window every day and just stares at her, making her a voyeurism target. He first discovers that she already has a boyfriend in the first episode, and he even observes the two of them have sex through her window. This scene becomes even more disturbing as he begins to imagine himself with her while hiding in the bushes outside her house. As a result, his obsession with her grows even stronger, and he turns his attention to her philandering partner.
