Who Is Alan Tudyk? The Voice Behind Pico The Toucan In ‘Encanto’

  • DCS

Alan Tudyk will provide the voice of Pico the Toucan in the upcoming Disney animated film Encanto, according to a tweet from the film’s director, Jarod Bush. The main character, Mirabel Madrigal, played by Stephanie Beatriz of Brooklyn 99, has a cute animal companion named Pico. Bush characterises him as ebullient but illiterate, which is the perfect description of a Disney animal sidekick.

Tudyk has voiced a character in every Disney Animated movie since Wreck-It Ralph in 2012, earning him the nickname “Disney Animation’s good luck charm,” which Bush uses in the tweet. Tudyk earned an Annie Award for voice acting for his portrayal of the dubious King Candy. The Duke of Weselton in Frozen, Alistair Krei in Big Hero 6, Duke Weaselton in Zootopia, Heihei in Moana, Knowsmore in Ralph Breaks the Internet, and most recently Tuk Tuk in Raya and the Last Dragon are all roles he has since done. His first two Disney movies, Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen, were so successful that it became something of an inside joke that he was Disney’s lucky charm and had to voice at least one character in every one of their movies.

Additionally, Tudyk provided voices for two other recent Disney movies, but this time for various studio divisions. In addition to reviving the role of Iago for the live-action Aladdin in 2019, he played the droid K2SO in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in 2016. Additionally, he will play Mr. Darling in David Lowery’s upcoming adaptation of Peter Pan, Peter Pan & Wendy, which will hit theatres in 2022.

The upcoming Encanto, which already features a stellar cast, could benefit from Tudyk’s involvement. Encanto, which has music by Lin Manuel-Miranda, centres on the Colombian Madrigal family, each of them possesses supernatural abilities. Except for Mirabel, every member. According to a recent trailer, each member of the family is endowed with a unique power by a magic candle. Mirabel is the only one who can save the family when their abilities are under danger.

The movie was created by Zootopia’s filmmakers Bush and Byron Howard as well as co-director Charise Castro Smith, who is directing her first feature. The movie script was co-written by Castro Smith and Bush. Wilmer Valderrama, Diane Guerrero, John Leguizamo, and the recently confirmed Colombian singer Maluma all appear in the movie. On November 24, the movie opens in theatres, and on Christmas Eve, it will be available exclusively on Disney+.
