Is San Andreas 2 Happening? Exploring The Possibility Of The Rock’s Sequel Movie

It can be challenging to keep track of all the movies Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has planned for the future with a project calendar as broad as his own biceps. The star of the next blockbuster has much to keep him occupied, including portraying god-like antiheroes in “Black Adam” and Superman’s closest pal in “DC League of Super-Pets.” The question is whether he will return to a role that had an earth-shattering impact.

In the epic (and factually dubious) catastrophe film “San Andreas,” Johnson costarred with Carla Gugino and Paul Giamatti in the story of emergency rescue pilot Raymond Gaines (Johnson), who sets out to save his family when California is struck by an earthquake. Before “Rampage,” the video game adaptation, and “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” this was filmmaker Brad Peyton’s second film project. Despite receiving only a 48% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, “San Andreas” went on to gross an astonishing approximately $475 million at the box office on a $110 million budget (via Box Office Mojo). After over 10 years, Johnson’s career has continued to soar, and as a result, some of his other blockbuster movies have gone on to receive sequels. Could “San Andreas” receive the same treatment, though?

San Andreas 2 has suffered due to Johnson’s hectic schedule

The Hollywood Reporter reports that discussions for a “San Andreas” sequel started a year after the film’s premiere. Since then, the project’s development has fluctuated greatly. The original plan called for writers Neil Widener and Gavin James to shake things up, write another episode with the cast, and bring back Peyton as well. After the announcement, little much changed until Johnson provided an update about his return to the disaster area in an appearance on SiriusXM in 2021. It turns out that there is one aspect of time that a blockbuster earthquake simply cannot match.

Johnson stated, assuring that there was still talk of Raymond Gaines coming back: “We had a fantastic idea for “San Andreas.” I believe it’s fantastic. In all honesty, the problem we’re encountering is scheduling, just as you people mentioned.” Really understandable Along with his eagerly anticipated debut as Black Adam, other projects have been lined up as a result of recent successes, such as a follow-up to his Netflix project with Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, “Red Notice,” and a recent addition to the production team for an acclaimed videogame adaptation for Amazon Studios called “It Takes Two” (via Deadline). It appears like “San Andreas 2” may become less likely to occur as the years pass, with any rumblings of the project hardly making a tremor, given the mounting to-do list.
