Although film comes as little surprise, Warner’s DC Studios has now formally announced the existence of The Batman sequel, along with its title and release date.
The Batman Part II, a sequel to the popular 2022 movie The Batman, will actually feature Robert Pattinson’s comeback. The release date for the numerically numbered sequel, which is currently planned for October 3, 2025, also features Matt Reeves returning to the helm. Executives affirm that Pattinson is currently just contracted for the sequel, indicating that this return is not part of a long-term agreement like the one Marvel Studios has with its actors. The sequel will instead debut under the recently created “DC Elseworlds” category, which designates the movie as taking place outside of the mainline DC Universe. This is similar to Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux, which is slated to come in 2024.
The Batman Part II’s Elseworlds Label
The DC movie roster, which formerly revolved around the Zack Snyder-directed films associated with 2017’s Justice League, has been reorganised, according to Gunn and Safran. Superman: Legacy, which debuts on July 11, 2025, just a few months before The Batman Part II, has been chosen as the primary DC Universe’s new flagship product. Although the Pattinson-starring franchise’s setting on a different Earth was already widely known, the implied barriers between the universes are now formally acknowledged with the latter’s Elseworlds moniker.
The distinction relieves Reeves of any responsibility to fit the movie into a complex canon. In fact, the filmmaker has just made it clear that he doesn’t want the ostentatious introduction of a flashy, scene-stealing supervillain in The Batman sequel. I also think that Rob [Pattinson] is so special in the character, to me, which is the thing that I really feel, he continued. “It has always been my intention to write these point-of-view narratives that allow the character to always be the narrative’s emotional core. Because frequently, once you complete the first one, other Rogues Gallery characters enter and sort of take over, and Batman sort of fades into the background emotionally or in terms of character.”
In addition, there are still plans for the long-awaited television spinoff featuring Colin Farrell’s Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, a.k.a. the Penguin. Reeves previously detailed how the movie will develop as an antihero story akin to Scarface, notably director Brian De Palma’s 1983 remake, with the nightclub-owning version of the DC comic book villain set to take the lead. The opportunity to work on the series and “truly sort of go into the depths of who this man is and look at that time where it’s kind of his Scarface moment,” he said, “is something I’m really looking forward to.” “He will seek dominance in Gotham at the precise moment when everyone will have underestimated him. The author and creator of the show, Lauren LeFranc, is amazing. She researched the protagonist. Before the movie was ever finished, I continued to show her the movie while she was writing the script.”
On October 3, 2025, The Batman Part II is slated to be released in theatres.
