The Indonesian horror movie “The Womb,” or “Inang,” was written by Deo Mahameru and directed by Fajar Nugros. The book is about a young woman named Wulan. Wulan decides to give up her child for adoption because she got pregnant without planning to and her partner doesn’t care. She meets Eva (Lydia Kandou) and Agus (Rukman Rosadi), a middle-aged couple who at first seem caring, kind, and thoughtful. They even invite Wulan to live with them while she is pregnant.
Wulan soon finds out, though, that Eva and Agus believe in old Javanese beliefs and have bad plans for her and her unborn child. Ironically, the reason they did this turned out to be Wulan’s best friend. Here is all the information you might need about how “The Womb” ends. SPOILERS AHEAD.
The Womb Plot Synopsis
The movie starts with a shot of Ki Ageng, played by Pritt Timothy, who looks like a shaman and is a key character in the movie. The footage helps set up the movie’s plot by introducing the idea of “Rebo Wekasan” to people around the world. On the Hijri Calendar, the phrase roughly means the last Wednesday of the month of Sapar. Ageng says that in Javanese traditions, Rebo Wekasan is a bad day, and that a child born on that day must go through a cleansing ritual to get rid of their “Sukerto,” or the bad luck they were born with. Ageng smiles at the end of the video and says in a threatening way that he has his own way to do the ritual.
The story then moves to Wulan in a clinic getting an ultrasound. She is 16 weeks into a pregnancy that was not planned. She talks to Heru (Emil Kusumo), the father of her unborn child, after she leaves the clinic. He doesn’t want to be responsible, so he gives her money to get an abortion.
Wulan grew up in a home where she was abused, and now she lives alone in a slum. She works at a supermarket where the manager is sleeping with her friend Nita (Rania Putri Sari) and has his eye on Wulan. She gets help from a support group, which gives her three choices. They can give her counseling until the baby is born, help her prepare for a safe abortion, or find a family to adopt the baby. Wulan picks the last one, even though they warn her that it will take a long time. After that, Wulan meets Eva and Agus, who, at first glance, seem friendly and open. They ask Wulan to stay with them until the baby is born and tell her she can come see the child whenever she wants after that.
Wulan is hesitant at first, but her landlord kicks her out because she hasn’t paid her rent. She goes to stay with Nita, but when she gets there, she finds that Hardiman, the manager, is also there. She has no choice but to call Eva and Agus, who come to get her.
Wulan walks into Eva and Agus’s house at the same time that a rat gets caught in a trap inside the house. Even though the images are not very subtle, they make it clear that Wulan and her unborn child are in mortal danger as long as she is there.
At first, everything is as good as it can be. Wulan is having the best time of her life while the middle-aged couple dotes on her. But soon, Wulan starts having nightmares about another pregnant woman, and the experience starts to go bad. Then she meets Ageng, who is told to her by her family that he is a friend. Wulan feels more and more uneasy as he does a ritual on her. She starts to tell the midwife that her hosts have hired about this, and then she realizes that the woman is very involved in what Eva and Agus are planning. Wulan calls Nita and asks her friend to help her get out, but before Nita can do that, Agus shows up and poisons her and Hardiman.
One day, Eva and Agus’s son Bergas (Dimas Anggara) comes home, which surprises his parents because they didn’t know he was coming. It throws a wrench in their plans because they never told Bergas about their bad deeds. But when Wulan says that she is almost a prisoner in the house, Bergas starts to remember things from his past. When he finds out the truth, he is horrified.
The Womb Ending: What Did Agus and Eva Want From Wulan?
Bergas finds old books in their house and figures out that his parents are going to kill Wulan and her unborn child to save him. When he was ten years old, their maid Sumiyati was pregnant. After that, he never saw her again, and he knows what his parents did to her. Bergas and Wulan try to get away, but they are caught. Eva puts him to sleep with hypnosis.
Bergas’s father is in the room with him when he wakes up. Agus finally tells his son what he wants to know. Ageng went to see his parents after he was born. The midwife was also there. Ageng told Agus and Eva that a Sukerto must be done in order to keep Bergas safe after he was born on Rebo Wekasan. At first, they didn’t believe this, but when Bergas was ten, he got sick.
After doctors told Agus and Eva that they couldn’t save their son, they turned to the occult in a last-ditch effort to save him. They killed Sumiyati and her child as a sacrifice, and Bergas soon got better. Ten years later, Bergas was bitten by a snake, which made his parents kill a woman named Supri and her child and put them on the altar as a sacrifice. Bergas is now 30 years old, which is why his parents looked for Wulan.
Bergas shows up with a broken bottle to his neck just as his parents and their friends are about to kill Wulan and her newborn son. He gets away with Wulan and her child, and it looks like he accidentally kills Ageng and Agus in the process. When it looks like they are safe, Bergas gets out of the car they were in and a truck runs over him. The idea here is that Bergas died because the ritual wasn’t finished and the curse that was put on him went off, killing him.
What Does the Scene in the Middle of the Credits Mean? Did the curse really hit Bergas?
The scene after the credits happens many years later. Wulan’s son is a teen, and she gave him the name Bergas. Eva and Agus used the same flower plants in their ceremonies that Wulan has. Wulan looks out her window and sees a woman who is pregnant. That night, she kills the woman with the axe we’ve seen Agus use before and pulls out her baby, probably to sacrifice them both along with the woman.
The movie doesn’t say for sure if the curse is real or not. Bergas’s death, like everything else that happens to him, is just a coincidence. But faith is interesting because it can give power where there is none. Correlation doesn’t mean causation, but for religious people, that’s usually enough. Because of this, it’s likely that the movie’s supernatural parts were kept vague on purpose.
The scene during the credits shows that Wulan went from being a victim to a bad guy because of what she went through. Since Wulan’s son was also born on Rebo Wekasan, she has started killing newborns and their mothers to protect them.
