Rachel Hollis, a controversial influencer, became a household name after she posted an unedited photo of herself in a bikini, stretch marks and all. The photo got a lot of good press, and she became a household name. She got a lot of fans, and then she wrote a best-selling book called “Girl, Wash Your Face.” But not everything that shines is gold, and after a messy divorce, Hollis was suddenly called out for making a lot of hurtful comments. In one case, she was criticized for being rude about her housekeeper, whose job she summed up as “cleaning her toilets.”
Hollis didn’t say sorry; instead, he doubled down. “No, sis, literally everything I do in my life is to live a life that most people can’t relate to,” Hollis said after a commenter on the now-deleted TikTok video called her “unrelatable.” “I can’t relate to any of the women I admire in history,” she said. In the video’s description, Harriet Tubman was mentioned as one of the “unrelatable” women she can relate to. That didn’t go over well with her followers. Hollis started getting more criticism because her message was so simple. It was something like, “Hard work pays off,” which left out systemic misogyny and racism.
Hollis said he was sorry many times, but he ended up putting off a tour and staying out of sight for a while. Then, in October 2022, Hollis was in the news again for the second time.
It’s been a mixed bag
Rachel Hollis shows that, with the possible exception of R. Kelly, canceling isn’t the end of everything. Hollis was in the news again in October 2022 because she signed a huge deal with SiriusXM. In 2020 and 2021, she had to deal with a lot of bad things. If you thought that after Hollis said she was like Harriet Tubman, no one would care what she has to say, SiriusXM knows something you don’t.
Hollis signed a contract with the streaming giant that gave it exclusive rights to distribute and advertise her show, “The Rachel Hollis Podcast.” COO of Stitcher Daniel Osit told Deadline, “Rachel has spent years growing her influence from a simple blog to a lifestyle empire that includes social media, books, audio, TV, and more. We’re happy that this deal will help her reach new listeners and grow her audience.” Hollis told the outlet that she hoped the partnership would bring great new guests to her show so that her viewers could meet them.
All of this was good news for Hollis because it meant that her podcast was likely to bring in more money. But just as things seemed to be getting back to normal, Hollis found out that her ex-husband, Dave Hollis, had died suddenly at age 47 in February 2023. Hollis wrote on Instagram, “We are so sad.” “I can’t find the right words because my heart is too broken. Please say prayers for the kids as we try to deal with the unthinkable.”
