Who is Harry Henning?
A young robber in a mask stops Faith as she is travelling with her doctor to nearby towns and makes an effort to rob her while holding a fake gun. However, her awareness of the situation and Nathan’s unexpected entrance catch the adolescent off guard, and he manages to avoid capture. The bandit’s escape makes the Mountie angry, but Faith begs him to let it go, and gradually they forget about it. But only a few days pass until she and Nathan spot an unknown young guy prowling around the Yosts’ mercantile, who unintentionally hurts his hand.
Faith promises to assist the young man and drives him to her clinic, but Nathan can’t help but suspect something is wrong. His instincts are spot on as the man tries to flee without receiving medical attention. By connecting the dots, Nathan concludes that the man is Harry Henning, the same thief who earlier attempted to rob Faith and who also took two tins of lard from Ned’s shop. To his astonishment, Scout appears to be unduly friendly with him after he is arrested and sent in jail.
Nathan eventually confronts Harry and inquires as to how he came to be a bandit, to which Harry replies with his terrible tale. He lives in the nearby Eagle Creek and comes from a farming family with a large amount of land that has just dried up and produced no crop, causing a serious financial issue for the town. Due to his family’s financial plight and lack of employment, Harry is compelled to turn become a bandit in order to provide for his family by robbing tourists and residents of adjacent towns.
Harry’s difficult circumstances have led him to commit crimes, but Nathan understands that he is not a bad person. He chooses to accompany the young child to the mercantile because he feels sorry for him and wants to give him a second shot. Harry sincerely regrets stealing from Ned and Florence there, and they generously accept his apology on the condition that he work for them at the mercantile to pay for the items he stole. The young guy quickly agrees, astounded by the generosity of the Hope Valley folks.
Harry takes advantage of his second chance to improve his life and provide for his family by settling into town life fast and getting along well with the Yosts. Meanwhile, Nathan makes a trip to Eagle Creek and is horrified to learn of the terrible conditions Harry’s family and other locals are in. When the latter is questioned about the same, he confesses that some Union City Holdings personnel inexplicably showed up at their door and persuaded his father to sell his land to them.
The Hennings’ farm and the town’s river quickly dried up, turning the area into wasteland and bringing about everyone’s financial disaster. Hearing this from Harry intrigues Nathan, who wonders who is responsible for all of this and whether Hope Valley will be the next victim. However, Harry comes to like Nathan and is appreciative of the kindness Nathan has shown him and his new life in Hope Valley.
