In many forms, zombie invasions have been explored in world cinema. ‘White Zombie (1932)’ and ‘I Walked With a Zombie (1943)’ are two good examples. After his 1968 indie horror film ‘Night of the Living Dead,’ George A. Romero established zombies as a modern genre with a cult following. Zombies blur the distinctions between horror, slasher, and other gruesome genres. They combine everything uncomfortable and terrible into one thing: the zombie apocalypse. It is a multifaceted genre that provokes fear, terror, disgust, shock, suspense, and horror all at once. Some of the most fascinating titles in this category may be seen on Prime Video.
Dead & Buried (1981)
Gary Sherman’s ‘Dead & Buried’ is a unique and underappreciated contribution into the zombie film genre. The intriguing plot of the film revolves around a little seaside hamlet where inhabitants unexpectedly die and then return from the dead. While it incorporates aspects of horror and mystery, what distinguishes it is its emphasis on psychological terror and a terrifying atmosphere. The cast of the picture features James Farentino, Melody Anderson, and Jack Albertson, all of whom give great performances. ‘Dead & Buried’ stands out for its spooky atmosphere, interesting storyline, and surprising finish, making it a must-see for zombie movie fans. Redcon-1 (2018)
‘Redcon-1,’ AKA ‘Redcon-1 – Army of the Dead,’ directed by Chee Keong Cheung, depicts a zombie apocalypse that spreads from a London prison and successfully cripples the UK. Although the pandemic has been temporarily halted by defending the south of England behind fortified walls, the discovery of improved and more powerful zombies multiplies the threat tenfold.
As the film unfolds, the army discovers that the scientist responsible for the outbreak is trapped in zombie-infested London. As a result, with nothing to lose and a nation’s hope riding on their shoulders, a group of eight special forces troops agrees to take on the undead metropolis and rescue the scientist in a last-ditch bid to save humanity. ‘Redcon-1’ can be viewed here.
Sam awakens the next morning to find his city infested by zombies. In the next room, he discovers Fanny as a zombie. Sam realises he is the sole survivor and must fortify himself in order to survive. When zombies detect the presence of humans, they congregate around the flat. Sam braces himself for the battle and discovers that there are more survivors. The film, directed by Dominique Rocher, stars Anders Danielsen Lie, Golshifteh Farahani, and Denis Lavant in key parts. ‘The Night Eats the World’ is available for streaming here.
The Zombie King (2013)
Aidan Belizaire’s ‘The Zombie King’ follows an everyday man named Samuel Peters. He becomes anxious to resurrect his wife and strikes a contract with Kalfu, the God of Malevolence. The agreement results in the collapse of the underworld as the Earth is overrun by the terrifying undead, with Samuel as the Zombie King. Even as zombies wreak devastation on Earth, tenacious inhabitants band together against the horrific menace in an epic battle for life and death, trying to dethrone the cursed monarch. Train to Busan (2016)
‘Train to Busan’ is about a divorced single father, Seok-woo, who is always working and unable to spend time with his daughter, Su-an. On the day he plans to take her to Busan to meet her mother, a chemical spill in another section of the city causes a terrifying zombie outbreak, causing the region to fall into chaos.
As Seok-woo and Su-an board a train to Busan with hundreds of other inhabitants, an infected girl spreads the virus, turning carriage after carriage of passengers into bloodthirsty zombies. The remainder of the film follows Su-an and Seok-woo’s battle to survive as their world implodes. Aside from the blood and gore, Yeon Sang-ho’s picture contains a lot of heart. The film can be viewed here.
White Zombie (1932)
‘White Zombie,’ a zombie genre classic, does not feature the brain-eating monsters commonly associated with the genre. Instead, it stars Bela Lugosi as Murder Legendre, a wicked voodoo master capable of transforming people into obedient zombies. When plantation owner Charles, who is already engaged to Madeleine, seeks Murder’s help, the plot takes a terrible turn. Made before the Hays Code, ‘White Zombie’ flirts with immorality, but its continuing appeal stems from its iconic status and Lugosi’s fascinating, over-the-top performance. This film is a must-see for fans of classic horror films. You can find it here.
Zoombies (2016)
When veterinarians use a banned serum to save a monkey from cardiac arrest, the Eden Wildlife Zoo, a precious haven for rare species, is jeopardised. The monkeys, which are agile and impossible to catch, end up contaminating the entire zoo, turning each animal into a vicious murdering machine while the people trapped within battle for their lives.
