Humza Yousaf is all set to become the First Minister of Scotland as he has won the Scottish National Party elections following the resignation of the current leader, Nicola Sturgeon. He will be the first Muslim and the first non-white leader of Scotland.
Yousaf began his political career in 2005 and was elected into the parliament for the first time in 2011. Over the years, he has also been able to generate huge wealth for himself. Here is everything we know about his net worth and earnings.
Humza Yousaf Net Worth
As per multiple sources, Humza Yousaf’s net worth is said to be around $5 million. Most of these earnings have come from his 18-year-long political career. The average salary of a Cabinet Secretary in the Scottish Parliament is $81k per annum.
Yousaf served as the Cabinet Secretary for Justice from 2018 to 2021 and the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care from 2021 to 2023. So he must have made around $81k each year since 2018 as his salary.
The politician was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1985. His parents were the first in their family to move to the United Kingdom from Pakistan. His grandfather worked in a sewing machine factory, while his father worked as an accountant. Yousaf studied politics at the University of Glasgow and joined the Scottish National Party (SNP) in 2005.
Yousaf started his political journey by participating in student politics and serving as the president of the Glasgow University Student Representative Council in 2006. He later worked for the SNP in different capacities, including as a parliamentary assistant and the head of the party’s youth wing.
In 2011, Yousaf was elected to the Scottish Parliament representing Glasgow. The next year, he was named Minister for External Affairs and International Development. At 27 years old, he was the youngest minister in the history of the Scottish Government.
The leader held several ministerial positions in the Scottish Government, including the Minister for Transport and the Islands and the Minister for Justice. He introduced various innovative policies in these roles, including the Free Bus Travel for Under 19s scheme that enabled young people to travel for free on local buses.
In 2018, Yousaf was made Cabinet Secretary for Justice, where he oversaw the implementation of key reforms in the Scottish justice system. Two years later, he was appointed the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care and was appreciated for his work in handling the Covid pandemic.
SNP Leadership and First Minister
In February 2023, Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland, told the SNP that she was stepping down as leader. This led to a leadership election within the party. Yousaf declared himself as a candidate for leadership against Kate Forbes and Ash Regan on February 18.
On March 27, he won the elections with 52% votes and was announced as the next First Minister. “I will be a First Minister for all of Scotland. I will work every minute of every day to earn and to re-earn your respect and your trust. To serve my country as First Minister will be the greatest privilege and honour of my life,” he said after winning the leadership.
