Painkiller: Richard Sackler’s Dog Unch and Its Whereabouts

  • DCS

‘Painkiller’ on Netflix is based on a genuine account of corporate greed that led to a healthcare crisis unlike any other that the country has ever experienced. It is now known as the opioid crisis, and it began with the introduction of the painkiller OxyContin, which Purdue Pharma produced and sold. In the show, which adopts a fictitious perspective, we follow Richard Sackler, who assumes control of the business after Arthur Sackler’s passing. He believes that OxyContin will help him build on his predecessor’s legacy and make a lot of money.

The antagonist of the story is revealed to be Richard Sackler, who is willing to go to any lengths to keep the medicine on the market and maintain its approval, careless of how it is harming the general populace. Perhaps Unch, Sackler’s dog, is the only likeable aspect of him. We have all the information you need if you want to learn more about the dog. Spoilers follow.

What Happened to Richard Sackler’s Dog Unch?

In “Painkiller,” which is set in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Purdue Pharma, its executives, and its sales representatives are highlighted as they work to increase OxyContin sales. Given this date and the approximate 10–13-year lifespan of dogs, we can infer that Richard Sakcler’s dog, Unch, passed away some time ago. The Netflix series focuses on the relationships around Sackler (Matthew Broderick) when creating his character. He keeps his home unoccupied and spends more time and energy on his dog than any other person. He brings Unch to work, but instead of meeting with John Brownlee from the US Attorney’s office, he plays with Unch, which irritates the legal professionals.

According to reports, Sackler’s past behaviour can be seen in all of this. ‘Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty,’ by Patrick Radden Keefe, describes how Sackler would bring Unch to the office and let him run around. Unch, a bulldog called after the stock market acronym “Unchanged,” which denotes that a share’s value has not changed for a specified length of time, was mentioned in the novel. It is also asserted that Unch frequently caused discomfort for others. Given that it was Richard Sackler’s dog and that it was believed to have a tendency of urinating in the corridors, nobody could do or say anything about it.

Similar events are depicted in “Painkiller,” when Sackler doesn’t give a damn if Unch’s presence annoys anyone. In fact, he deliberately uses the dog to embarrass other people. The affection Sackler has for his dog also gives him some humanity; otherwise, he comes out as a rapacious businessman who just cares about making money. Nevertheless, whether we like the dog or not, it hardly accomplishes anything to improve the audience’s negative perception of Sackler.
