Another day, another Netflix cancellation! Uncoupled, starring Neil Patrick Harris, is the most recent series to be cancelled by the streaming service. After just one season, the romantic comedy has been discontinued.
The surprising development has left the show’s viewers disappointed, and many are venting their frustration on social media. In Uncoupled, a 40-something gay man named Michael Lawson was followed as his 17-year relationship with his partner ended abruptly.
Uncoupled Canceled by Netflix After One Season
On July 29, 2017, the eight-episode first season of the show debuted about Netflix. Since that date, there has been no word on the renewal of the series. On January 13, over six months later, it was revealed that the show would not have another season.
Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman are the authors of the program. Despite Uncoupled’s demise, Starr will continue to collaborate with Netflix because he is the creator of another popular series on the service, Emily in Paris, which just released its third season and has been renewed for a fourth.
In the movie Uncoupled, Neil Patrick Harris played a real estate agent working in New York City who “seemed to have it all” including a loving family, close friends, and a 17-year relationship with Colin (Tuc Watkins).
“But Michael is totally taken off guard when Colin unexpectedly moves out on the night before his 50th birthday. The official logline for the series stated, “Overnight, he has to face two nightmares: losing the guy he thought was his soulmate, and suddenly finding himself a single gay man in his mid-forties in New York City.
The Reason Behind the Cancellation
On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season of Uncoupled garnered favorable reviews from both reviewers and viewers, earning ratings of 73% from the former and 75% from the latter. The show was able to create a sufficient amount of talk, but this did not transfer into significant viewership.
After its launch, Uncoupled season 1 only spent one week in the top 10 on Netflix. The show’s demise is reportedly due to the fact that it was unable to draw the anticipated number of viewers.
The show also starred Tisha Campbell as Suzanne Prentiss, Marcia Gay Harden as Claire Lewis, Emerson Brooks as Billy Burns, Brooks Ashmanskas as Stanley James, André De Shields as Jack, Nic Rouleau as Tyler Hawkins, and Colin Hanlon and Jai Rodriguez as the Jonathans. Harris and Watkins were the only actors not to appear on the list.
Fans Disappointed with the News
Given that the first season ended on a cliffhanger, many fans are furious that the show has been cancelled. He was great, and Uncoupled was honestly one of the best comedies I’ve seen in a long time. A fan tweeted, “Swear @netflix / @NetflixUK didn’t give it a chance.
Uncoupled was comparable to Emily in Paris, however another user added that they would have liked to witness the show’s progression. It didn’t help that it finished on a cliffhanger. You really can’t trust Netflix to commit to any show unless it achieves stratospheric numbers, another admirer added in a comment. A good show, #Uncoupled was very witty and amusing. I was salivating for a season 2 after that cliffhanger.
