The Story :

A wife, who is being investigated as a suspect in her husband’s death, shares information about their tumultuous marriage that appear to only further obfuscate the truth. That’s what we took from the trailer of Haseen Dillruba. But, just like most murder mysteries, there is more to the story than meet the eyes.

The story starts in Jwalapur where a bomb blast happens and it is apparent that Rishu has died in it. The story continues in flashback from 6 months ago.

Rishi (Vikrant Massey) is heartbroken over a rejected proposal for arranged marriage. Rani (Taapsee Pannu) is his second meeting for arranged marriage. Rani seems adventurous as opposed to Rishi’s simple nature. Their first meeting embarks flames in Rishi’s heart and he is bowled over. She’s a huge fan of Dinesh Pandit, a crime novelist.

Rani believes she is far too good for her self-effacing engineer-husband, Rishabh Saxena (Vikrant Massey). She has no reservations about stalking an ex-boyfriend on social networking. She offers her shy father-in-law (Daya Shankar Pandey) a makeover as a professional beautician, much to the disgust of the latter’s wife. Here’s a Hindi film heroine worth her weight in gold. Unfortunately, her eccentric personality does not entirely transfer to the film.

While in the present we see the case of Rishi’s death (murder), in the past we see the story move forward. The film belongs to the typical whodunnit murder mystery category and delivers a familiar yet engaging story. It is safe to say that Dinesh Pandit serves as a fourth main character in the movie.

Performances :

Vikrant Massey isn’t a new face anymore, he has proved his acting’s metal over and over and Haseen Dillruba is no exception. Vikrant steals the show. Taapsee has a knack for good stories it seems and has done justice to her part. Harshvardhan Rane has a smaller role than you’d expect in a love triangle.

Verdict :

Even though the films keeps you guessing, it still doesn’t take a genius to figure that the movie can end only in two possible ways. Initially the film did feel like a glorified and extended version of Crime Patrol. But, the performances makes it stand out. The story isn’t far fetched, nothing extra-ordinary, nor disappointing. Dialogues are good for a chuckle or too. Overall you’d not be disappointed. SO if you don’t have any plans for the weekend, we suggest go for it.
