The film is based on the novel Fingersmith and tells the story of Sook-hee, who is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress, Lady Hideko, by a con man named Count Fujiwara. Sooh-hee comes to scam Hideko, but the two quickly become acquainted.

The Housemaid is a sexual thriller film about a couple, Hae-re and her husband Hoon, who employ a housemaid, Eun-yi, to look around the house while the woman is pregnant with twins. However, the husband begins an affair with the maid and becomes pregnant as a result. When Hae-re learns, she pushes Eun-yi to abort the child, prompting her to embark on a revenge expedition.
