The Father Stu cast and crew depict Stuart Long (Wahlberg), who started his “professional” life as a boxer but ultimately ended up becoming a Catholic priest, in a way that is true (as far as Hollywood is concerned). Carmen dismisses Father Stu, stating that she would not even contemplate dating him unless he had been baptised. Stu is so taken with her that he agrees and starts the process of becoming a Catholic. Stu runs into two parishioners, Ham and Jacob, who are headed to the seminary as the procedure gets underway. Stu and Jacob do not get along.
Finally, Carmen consents to date Stu. Stu ultimately lands a job on an infomercial at this point, but things don’t go as expected. Stu goes to the bar to vent his aggravation where he runs with an enigmatic man who gives him some wise counsel. Additionally, he warns Stu against driving that evening.
However, Stu, being Stu (he was arrested previously in the movie for a DUI), decides to ride home on his motorcycle while intoxicated. He eventually flips off his bike, hits the back of a car, and is then ran over by another vehicle. He wasn’t anticipated to survive because of the extent of his injuries.
The Virgin Mary visits Stu as he passes in and out of consciousness and tells him that he cannot pass away in vain. Stu starts to feel better somehow. His father (Gibson), who has a troubled relationship with him, starts to visit him while he is still in the hospital.
But Stu, who is making progress toward recuperation, is aware of his prospects. He decides to enrol at the seminary since he believes the priesthood is now his calling. After first being turned down, Stu personally argued his case and was eventually accepted to the seminary, where he reconnected with Ham and Jacob. Stu trips and falls while playing pickup basketball one day at the seminary. Due to his inability to stand up by himself, Stu must visit the doctor.
Stu has been identified as having inclusion body myositis, an extremely uncommon muscular illness comparable to Lou Gehrig’s disease. Father Stu has it, despite the fact that it is uncommon for someone so young to have it, and the prognosis is not good. Father Stu starts to have hand weakness.
