Anaïs in Love (2021)
‘Anas in Love’ is a holiday film as well as a comedy about infidelity with a lot of “falls for” in it. The film, directed by Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet, depicts the story of Anas (Anas Demoustier), 30, who is in an unpleasant relationship with her boyfriend, Raoul (Christophe Montenez), when a much older married man, Daniel (Denis Podalydès), falls for her. The unusual combination tries to get things going, with Anas looking for a way out. But this isn’t the point of the film. It tells the story of Anas falling in love with Daniel’s live-in partner Emilie (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi), a prominent writer. Anas spends time with Emilie on the beautiful Brittany peninsula, and we get a sense of unvarnished longing and belonging that the two women are secretly developing for each other. Deep Water (2022)
‘Deep Water,’ starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, is an erotic thriller with plenty of sensuality, thrill, and motivated infidelity, or infidelity with a purpose. Vic (Affleck) and Melinda (de Armas) are married with a kid, but their convoluted relationship is built on an unusual agreement made to avoid the chaos that divorce brings. Melinda is permitted to have affairs and have sexual relations with other guys. When one of Melinda’s boyfriends is slain, all eyes shift to Vic, who has previously claimed to have murdered another of her lovers. Elena Undone (2010)
‘Elena Undone’ is a “intense affair” in which Elena, the wife of a preacher who is anti-homosexuality, falls in love with Peyton, a lesbian writer. However, it takes time for their relationship to develop into friendship and ultimately into love. This slow, nuanced evolution, as well as the manner in which it is depicted, is what makes the film worthwhile. Elena understands that if she moves forward, there will be no turning back to her family, which consists of her husband and kid. Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)
‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’ transports us to 18th-century France, where we meet painter Marianne (Noémie Merlant) and her subject, bride-to-be Hélose (Adèle Haenel). Before they may marry, the groom must approve of Hélose’s portrait. Hélose, who is hesitant to marry, is not ready to commission the painting. Marianne’s sole option is to keep her company during the day as a companion, learning about her physically and emotionally, and painting her portrait at night. The World to Come (2020)
Mona Fastvold’s historical drama ‘The World to Come’ stars Vanessa Kirby, Katherine Waterston, Christopher Abbott, and Casey Affleck. The novel is set in 1850s New York and follows Abigail, who lives on a rural farm with her husband. Abigail is consumed by her uninteresting life, which is characterised by melancholy and estrangement from her spouse. This is when she meets her new neighbour, Tallie, and makes a friend. As time passes, they create an unexpected bond that is bound to meet challenges in a world dominated by men. When they kiss, things become more tricky.
